Boston Trip!

Every year there is a forum for Students in Admissions and this year I was lucky enough to be invited to go! I went with my roommate, Warren, to represent the Tour Guides and my dear friend Amara who represented out Student Ambassador Club. We also had our boss Joye, and her daughter-in-law Lizi as some more great company.

This year the forum was held at Northeastern University in Boston, Mass. on September 11, so we went down the day before to get a taste of the city! Enjoy!

Flooding

Hurricane Irene hit Vermont pretty hard. The school has been working to help everyone effected by the flood. I was unable to volunteer the day that many people from the college went so I went with a recent graduate to help up one day a few towns over. Here are some photos:

We just had that bittersweet time of year known to most as graduation. Many people are moving on to help the rest of the world and will be missed very much.

Another great place to go is Smuggler's Notch. It is about 15 minutes from the school and a great place to hike. I went with a friend the other day when it had been passable for only about two days. That is snow you are looking at!

Pyramid Massage Program

These pictures are from Pyramid Massage came to give a demonstration at our school a few weeks back. I was hoping to get some more from others but I couldn't wait any longer. The school is working with Pyramid so that students can become massage certified and it would be an internship. This is a form of massage called "cupping" where they put fire in a cup and then suction it to your back. I had eight cups total on my back.

My friend and I were on our way back to campus after a well enjoyed week long break. On our way back we stopped to get something to drink from a gas station. Well, they recently updated it so now they have a special milkshake machine and I wanted one. So what you do it remove a cup from the freeze (in the cup is ice cream) and you put it in this machine that adds milk and whips it. Well, i removed the lid and look at it and this is what it said:

Snow has melted and the grass is green. The landscape crew has been working to get the flower beds and trees taken care. Everything is looking to great!! Today was also SOOOOOO warm. :)

Today was the first time in a long time that I have seen this many people out on campus. Of course, the time I take this picture there is no one in it. Haha, go figure.

Let's just say, one of our friends got milkshake all over a friend of mine's car. We thought about what we could do to get back and I thought of covering his car in Post-its.

Ever Play Chubby Bunny?

Ok so, for some reason these pictures get a little mixed up when I upload them. Anywho, it's still funny!

Do you know the rules of chubby bunny? It's how many average sized marshmallows can you fit in your mouth and still say "chubby bunny." At this point, I gave up and started using M&Ms.

In this picture Chelsea (purple shirt) was about to... 4 or 5 and I believe Becca (green plaid) was bringing over the trash bin in case we couldn't keep then in anymore.

I has 2 in and she just put her 3rd in.

This was... after i gave up. I had 4 and I was laughing so hard they almost shot across the room. Good thing I aimed for the garbage!

This was literally right after I spit them out.

Hmmm let's see. This was early. I believe that was my 3rd one going in. I had to adjust them so I could breathe.

And this here is the fourth one going in. This is where it all got bad. :-p

I don't even know... I think I was trying not to laugh.

I was about to try for a fifth... good thing I didn't.

This was with two. It's surprising how hard it is to talk with just two... let alone 4.

We we're laughing at each other and how crazy we sounded when we said "chubby bunny."

Like I said, some of these pictures get rearranged when I upload them. This was when I was putting the first marshmallow in.

Let's just say, you make amazing friends here. Friendships that can last a lifetime. I cherish each and every one of my friends and everyday is a fun experience; well, after our homework is done of course. ;)

Just because it's winter doesn't mean we can't go out and roast marshmallows! We took a short drive over to Dog's Head (big rock near the river), found a nice, safe spot to make a fire, and made some smores. :) It was a little chilly, but we survived.

This fire was nice and warm... Too bad it only lasted about 10 mins before it died.

They were all bundled up and huddling close together to keep warm while I worked with the fire.

Haha. This is Spencer; he was just being funny.

Accepted Students Day

Hey Everyone!

So today (well now yesterday) was our Accepted Students Day! It was our first and last of this year (our first one got canceled due to an unexpected 2 and a half feet of snow in one night!). Anywho, I took some pictures to give those of you who couldn't make it, a general idea of what it would've looked like.

This is Ashley (one of the blog contributers). We were talking about how this blog is a war between us (it really isn't, we're just good enough friends that we get to joke around like that). She is actually wearing our BRANK SPANKIN' NEW shirts. The Student Ambassadors designed and purchased shirts. "It's your time. Your college. Get involved."
This is Toni... enough said. She is just so awesome she got her own full frontal profile.. WITH A POSE!!
Class #1 = Done!, FYS Presentation = Done!, Lunch = to be completed now.
All of the students were in their class and we were just hanging out and talking.
We had a beautiful (but windy) day for this. I think mother nature was trying to suck up after the snow storm during the first one.
Students were here and the show was about to get started. There are the girls who put this day together; you may recognize some of them. Sadly though, Patrick is not in the picture.
As much fun as the entire day is, you have to admit that lunch is the best time! I mean, come on, you get to socialize, eat, and be loud. :)

Well, all in all this day was a huge success. Between the amazing admissions counselors and the countless number of hosts... I mean, it was truly amazing. I definitely look forward to having more students on campus so they can get a feel of what it's like for themselves.

Casino Night

Hey everyone! I usually don't like to write much but I feel these pictures deserve the explanation. The following pictures are from our 34th Annual Casino Night to benefit the United Way of Lamoille County. It is an event held every year by the entire Student Government (yours truly included) where all the money raised goes to the United Way of Lamoille County. This year we raised $950 and has over 180 people come and have some "Classy Vegas" fun!

Sadly I was unable to get many pictures because I was working dealing cards and auctioning off prizes more than half the night, but I think you get the gist!

As we all know, Vermont is known for it's amazing maple syrup. Well since this weekend was the Vermont Maple Festival, a few of us went to local sugar houses to check out the products and get some free tasting! These pictures were both taken at a sugar house just past JCS. They are able to produce 1,000 gallons of syrup a season. We also checked out a sugar house that just one guy ran in his back yard that only produces 26 gallons on average a year. That's a big difference!

Enjoying a Saturday evening in downtown Burlington. As we were headed back towards campus we came across this truck with the perfect license plate!

One of the many jobs on campus is working in Dibden. Call time is one hour before the show starts and we were early. We were a little early so two of my friends were playing games on their phone. This was before the Taiko Drumming show. It was an amazing and uplifting show!

Enjoy the mud season! Let's hope Spring is truly here to stay!! It's time for shorts and t-shirts. :)

Long time, no chat! Today is a beautiful Thursday [and Saint Patrick's Day!] here on campus. With a temperature of a whomping 54oF, people are out celebrating the warm weather! Rugby players are out in the melting snow for practice, the frisbee peeps are out tossing their frisbee's back-and-forth, skateboarders skating, and just plain outdoor socializing!

The school closed today for the second time this year and the seventh time in twenty-five years.

Minority Tour

Johnson State College's first year partnered with the Minority Tour. It was a success with many students interested.

Hey everyone, it's a beautiful day here at Johnson State about 30 degrees outside but it feels more like 50. I couldn't let myself stay outside on such a nice day so while working I just took a quick walk past a few buildings on campus to show you all the amazing weather we have today!

People have started to make snowmen out of the snowballs in the snowbanks. ^

Here in the Student Government Association Office they are working hard to help all the students on campus (gotta love candid shots). ^

As I walked out of Stearns Student Center I happened to run into a fellow rugger just out of class. ^

We both agreed, it was a day for t-shirts (probably didn't need to be facing the sun while I took the picture though). ^

Again, I cannot say enough about the gorgeous day. ^

And last but not least, we have grass for the first time in probably four months. It was pointed out to me on my walk by a fellow student. ^

My Favorite Building On Campus.

My favorite building on campus is the library and the walkway in between the library and math / science building, Bentley. The library's beautiful glass frame allows students to look outside as they are studying or relaxing in a peaceful environment and the walkway allows you to see the entire campus as you are walking from building to building. Just another joy of Johnson State. :)

Opportunities Are Everywhere!

Around every corner, you will find opportunities for just about anything! From sports games and job positions, to on and off campus activities, you will know!

An event going on now is the production of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" here at Johnson in the Dibden Performing Arts Center! Posters are everywhere and last night's opening sbow was a major success! I do not remember the last time I have laughed so hard. I highly suggest to pick up a ticket and go to a show either tonight [Friday, February 11th] or tomorrow [Saturday, February 12th] at 7pm. Doors open at 6:30pm, so make sure to get there early! (More pictures of the performance to come from Mr. Chris Barry)

There is always something to do and one fun thing is the Student Government Association plays a movie at 7pm and 9pm every Monday and Wednesday. We have a special deal going on so we get movies after they leave the theater and before they get to DVD form. This week they are playing Paranormal Activity 2.

Hello one and all!!!

Long time, no blog! Second semester has already started and has been very busy [in a good way!]. So far loving my classes [even math! I am shocked] AND am officially a Zumba instructor! Tonight is my third class here on campus and I cannot wait! My first class drew in between 70 and 80 people!!!

Below freezing tempatures have taken over Johnson for the past few today with today at a high of a whole 20 degrees!

Hey this is the first post that I have done for a little bit so sorry for that. I've been taking lots of not so exciting photos(headshots etc.) for the Newspaper recently so I havent had that much to put on. These here start off with some from a basketball game at the beggining of their season some of the dance show at JSC recently, and then the Christmas tree that me and my girlfriend just put up!

Since Saturday morning, it has been a constant blizzard outside. The amount of snow is unbelievable and is said to last all week!!! I myself, am not a fan of snow unless it is the week of Christmas. So this is not weather near and dear to my heart.

But besides the weather, a busy week is ahead. From work and finals preparation, to my boyfriends birthday and my Zumba certification on Sunday, I will be BUSY BUSY BUSY!!!

Busy Busy Busy.

Life has been very busy lately for this girl. A couple weeks ago I started teaching at an after school program in Cambridge. I am teaching a Theatre group for 1at through 6th graders and then a 3rd grade homework club. I absolutely LOVE working with kids and this defiantly pumps me up to teach. I also got a THIRD job that I had training for this past Friday at 4:30am. Talk about CRAZYYY!!

When it comes to school, school is keeping me busy also. Lots of papers, reading, etc. But I love staying busy. Class registration is also this week and now that I have my education concentration all settled [Psychology], I am all set to register!

Other then school and work, it is almost Thanksgiving break! It is so odd that school has gone by so fast already. I cannot imagine how fast these next three years will go by. I also will be certified to teach Zumba in a month and two days and am SO PUMPED! With my Aunt being an instructor, my Mom getting certified with me, and the several Zumbathons I have participated in within the last two weeks, I am more then ready to get certified and start teaching her at Johnson. And the worse of all things, IT IS SNOWING! A lot. Even though it is mainly freezing rain, I hate seeing the ground white unless it is the week of Christmas. Should of expected it this early, seeing how I am on top of a mountain. ;)

Off to do homework and such. Keep warm and take care!

Woman's rugby played with Lyndon State and University of Maine at Farmington to play some rugby at "Ruck for a Reason." It was a rugby game to raise money to fund breast cancer research. The JSC girls split up so we could play a longer, bigger game.

Both JSC Mens and Womans rugby teams had games this weekend. The girls combined with Chaplain College to play UVM's B-side team at their pitch, in the first scrimmage of our season. The men's team played Westfield State here at home for their play off game.

As a fundraiser Break Away auctioned off several JSC guys and gals this past Saturday.

Today the American Red Cross came and many students, faculty, staff, and residents of surrounding towns all came out to help save lives!

First snow!

Our Men's Rugby team is now undefeated for the second year in a row! They are having their first play off game this Sunday! I cannot wait!

The october rail jam took place in the middle of campus today. Everyone is getting a little antsy and is ready for the snow to come, and the mountains to open. This will have to do for now, the snow will be here shortly. Any snow is october is always good!

Back From Vacation And Preparing For Mid-Terms...

After a week of vacation [which consisted of work, classroom observations, and sitting in the freezing cold watching my younger brother play soccer], I am back at JSC and on a roll.

The day before departing for vacation, I moved all of my belongings from Arthur's dormitory [the substance free building] to Senators North [considered the upper classmen building]. Lots and lots of packing and unpacking [for both myself and my new roommate] was required even after vacation. By Sunday night after returning, my side of the room was all settled in.

Being October 12th, midterms are right around the corner and teachers are assigning papers and reading like crazy. Thankfully, my grandmother bought me a printer over vacation [NOTE TO ALL INCOMING STUDENTS: Do NOT forget to purchase a printer for school. It is not something you want to overlook, like I did.] making printing paper after paper mindless.

While busy with school work and trying to find another job around the area, you notice papers and books pile up everywhere around the room. No longer is a bed just a sleeping place, but a homework lounge and collection zone for papers. [as shown above]

My name is Ashley Bourdeau. I am from Saint Albans, Vermont and attended high school at Missisquoi Valley Union High School. I am a Freshman here at Johnson State College majoring in Elementary Education and work in the Admissions Office. I was thrilled when I found out that Johnson was creating a blog for students and perspective students to be able to witness life on campus from the viewpoint of current students. I plan on posting as often as I can about my life on campus, experiences, and activities.

The week is winding down.

Hey everyone,

So I missed a post yesterday, I had two exams to study for so that took priority sadly. Nothing too new to report here on campus, two days until break officially starts though for most it's only one. Another thing I love at this school: almost no classes are held on Friday.

I really am not sure what else to report today. Everyone is getting ready for Death of a Salesman, a lot of my very good friends and roommate all work in Dibden (our theater) and they have been working hard since about 9 this morning to get everything set for the show at 8 tonight. It's been abnormally warm the past few days, 70's at least, some love it others just want the snow to come. I say let it cool down, but that's just me. I had mentioned my flannel the other day and I have been seeing even more of them out. On my way to class today I stopped and gave my friend a hug and a kid turned to us and said "Hey guys, wanna wear red flannels today? OK." and the three of us stood there in our matching red flannels, loving life.

Well I suppose that is enough rambling for now. I will leave you with this picture I took yesterday (sorry about the quality it was on my phone) of my Wellness and Alternative Medicine class. We had a guest speaker who talked to us about herbalism, and then took us outside and showed us the plants we have around and what you can do with them. Johnson is one of only a handful of schools in the country that offers a Wellness and Alternative Medicine major and it is a great program. I highly recommend looking into it, or even just take a class and see what you think, that is what I am doing.

Hey all!

I am here in the SGA sipping on a nice warm cocoa, after my fresh apple snack, wearing my Patriots sweats, and favorite flannel. Fall is in full swing here at Johnson State, athletes are working hard, everyone is getting out the Uggs and hoodies, and not a single person can ignore the colors. The campus is buzzing about apple piking, pumpkin carving, the games won, lost, and about to come. Not to mention our first break is now less then a week away! Alumni weekend was this past weekend and the campus was as full of life as ever. This week Death of a Salesman is going to be here with the one and only Christopher Llyod, we have our usual movie showing (Avatar this week), our Thursday night Open Mic, and of course lots of games for soccer, tennis, rugby, volleyball, and golf.

I took a few pictures of the storm that is brewing overhead and the colors that we are seeing every day. There will be more to come!
